1.Apple MacBook Pro

This upgrade to the laptop line is the first truly big leap that it has seen in a long time. That’s not to say that it looks all that different from previous models. In fact, as big of a change as the M1 chip is, it’s the only big upgrade the Pro 13-inch gets. If you have a 2019 or even an early 2020 model, for instance, you’ll probably want to wait a few generations before getting a Pro with an M1 chip.

However, it’s still a big update. This new model is 2.8 times faster than its predecessor and has a better battery life to boot. Additionally, it’s three times faster than comparable Windows laptops.

2.Lenovo ThinkPad E15

The predecessor Lenovo ThinkPad E590 is a logical choice for a comparison device. Like with the ThinkPad E14, we take in the more expensive Lenovo ThinkPad T590 into the equation as well. Additional comparison devices are the Dell Vostro 15 and the MSI Modern 15.

With the ThinkPad E series, Lenovo targets both the normal office market as well as people who occasionally like to play games – at least when the ThinkPad laptop is configured with an AMD GPU. Bringing these two things together proves more difficult than Lenovo might have thought, however, as the Lenovo ThinkPad E15 struggles with its cooling system.

3.HP Pavilion 15

It’s been two years since we last reviewed a standard HP Pavilion 15 and a lot has changed since then. HP has updated the chassis design as well as the 8th gen Whiskey Lake-U CPU and GeForce MX250 GPU to 11th gen Tiger Lake-U and the MX450, respectively.

The Pavilion name carries some of HP’s most affordable laptops in contrast to the higher-end Envy series and flagship Spectre series.

The system we’re looking at today has been fully configured with the Core i7-1165G7 CPU, 16 GB of RAM, 1 TB PCIe SSD, and dedicated Nvidia graphics for about  USD. Its specifications are therefore higher than your typical budget Ultrabook especially in terms of graphics as many in this category have no Nvidia options at all.

4.ASUS VivoBook 15

In terms of portability, the system measures 0.78 by 14.1 by 9.1 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.75 pounds. That’s not super lightweight, but still a far cry from being heavy, and should be able to go in your backpack or bag without much notice. The chassis is made of plastic and mostly feels solid.

The texture doesn’t feel too cheap, and there’s some flex if you push around the keyboard or the lid, but nothing that should be noticeable or concerning in normal use.

5.Dell Inspiron 15

Build quality is very consistent, too. The wrist-rest barely budges, the screen feels sturdy, and the underside has a little give – but all the components inside are well protected.

We wouldn’t really have a problem with slinging the Dell Inspiron 15 inside a backpack and expecting it to survive our travels. You’ll only need to use a protective sleeve if you’re concerned about aesthetic damage.

This isn’t a particularly expensive notebook, though, so don’t expect metal draped over every surface.
