For those of you not keeping up with chipset changes, AMD’s increment from the 300 series to 400 series primarily includes improvements for board physical specifications to formally support XFR2 (an update of AMD’s extended frequency range feature) and Precision Boost Override for what AMD calls its 2nd Generation Ryzen chips (Ryzen 2000 series).
AMD provides specifications for layer counts and supported memory speeds, regulator design requirements, and other stipulations for these refreshed boards. Between X470 and B450, the same IO support dynamic that was found with last year’s X370/B350 remains. In other words, B series boards support fewer USB3.0 Gen1, PCIe Gen3 x16 slots, and PCIe Gen2 lanes than their more expensive brothers. For more details, you can check the chart above.

To the builders who would prefer to plug their ears and repeat “MicroATX is too big,” we would like to remind them that the extra DIMM slots can come in handy. While PCIe slots are of greater importance to some builders, all builders should be able to appreciate the ability to upgrade memory. This was our conclusion when we recently tried to upgrade from 16GB to 32GB on a Mini-ITX office machine, only to be confounded by the 8GB-per-DIMM limit of DDR3.
That quibble aside, MSI makes reasonable use of space on other parts of this board, adding a four-lane x16-length slot to the bottom, as well as an M.2 slot above each x16-length slot. Due to the B365 chipset’s limitations, though, the second M.2 slot works only when the bottom PCIe slot is empty. Perhaps the B365 chipset would have made more sense on a Mini-ITX board?
5.MSI Intel B460 PRO

The B460M Mortar, like the ASRock we’ve also tested, includes a BIOS setting to boost the default power limits of 65W CPUs. This means you can ‘overclock’ your non K-series CPU if your cooling can handle it. It’s a nice way to gain some extra performance, particularly if you often load up all your cores in different productivity apps.
MSI also deserves credit for its fan hysteresis functionality. If you’re into tweaking your fan curves for optimum noise levels and cooling performance, MSI has you covered.
The MSI B460M Mortar is an excellent B460 motherboard, offering a great feature set at an attractive price. The main boxes are all ticked, well, at least those that MSI has control over (damn Intel’s B460 memory limitation).
It’s got a strong VRM, 2.5Gb LAN, WiFi 6 and adequate, if not particularly outstanding I/O. Pairing it with a 65W non-K processor and having a crack at pseudo overclocking is definitely worth the minimal efforts too.
6.MSI ATX DDR3
Features
- Socket LGA 1150
- Intel Z87 Express chipset
- ATX
- 1 PCI-E x16 3.0 + 1 PCI-E x16 (16/4), 2 PCI-E x1 and 2 PCI
- VGA, DVI and HDMI
- CrossFire ready
- OC Genie 4
- Military Class 4 Components
One of MSI’s main focus points of the last twelve months has been style. This typically means fashioned heatsinks, almost-invisible traces and if possible a reduction of on-the-board components (trying to balance price as well). MSI wants its motherboards to be shown off, rather than hidden inside a case, such that other users can show it off to their friends and perhaps entice them into a similar build.
The Gaming 5 aims to the more cost conscious Haswell build while still maintaining a full ATX size in the red and black livery featuring the MSI Gaming logo.
On the gaming side of the hardware equation the Gaming 5 is fitted with a Killer E2205 network port which comes with application prioritization software, as well as an enhanced Realtek ALC1150 audio solution via Audio Boost. For users with USB DACs there is a feature to offer enhanced power to a pair of USB ports as well to improve power signal quality.
There is also M.2 support for 22x42mm to 22x80mm devices up to PCIe 2.0 x2 speeds, and all the fan headers onboard are 4-pin.

Mark today in the Intel history calendar, if you are keeping one, because Skylake, Z170 and mainstream DDR4 are here. We’ve been keeping tight-lipped about this for a few weeks and we can finally show off what we have been working on.
You already know almost all of the details regarding the Skylake processors being launched today; the i5-6600K and i7-6700K, but what about Z170? Well, we know it supports DDR4 and features the new 1151 socket, but something that really shines through for this chipset is the absolutely huge connectivity incorporated. Motherboard manufacturers now have up to 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes and up to 10 USB 3.0 ports to play with.
Now some of you may be thinking that you can’t fit 20 PCIe lanes onto a single standard motherboard and you would be correct, to a certain extent. In recent years, M.2 (or mini PCIe) has really taken the expansion world by storm and with Z170, you can start to see M.2 ports crop up in multiples depending on the motherboard.
In theory, you could have 3, 4 5 or even more M.2 ports on a single motherboard. What’s more, these ports accept RAID and you can see some truly insane figures if used with U.2 devices such as the Intel NVME 750 SSD.
8.ASRock B450M
Features
- Country Of Origin : China
- Slots: 3X Pci-Express 3.0 X16 Slots (One Runs At X8, One Runs At X4), 3X Pci Express 2. 0 X16 Slots (Run At X4), 1X Pci Express 2. 0 X1 Slot
- Multi-Graphics: Supports Amd Quad Crossfire And Crossfire Technology. Os - Microsoft Windows 10 64-Bit
- Audio: Realtek Alc892 7. 1-Channel High Definition Audio Codec With Content Protection
ASRock has a new value MATX board with the latest B450 chipset from AMD; it’s got everything you need and nothing you don’t.
The ASRock B450M Pro4 MATX motherboard has all the essentials. There are plenty of ports on the back and a PS/2 port for those with old school peripherals. You’ll find 4 SATA ports and 2 M.2 slots for storage, RGB headers for aesthetics and gigabit Ethernet for connectivity.
Whilst the audio is the Realtek ALC892 codec and not the ALC1220 we see on ‘gaming’ products it’s still going to be good enough for all but the most hardcore of gamers and it fits the price point well.
9.AsRock Rack X470D4U
Features
- Supports AMD AM4 socket Ryzen Series CPUs

The ASRock Rack X470D4U represents AMD Ryzen stepping into new territory as a server processor. Readers have been asking us to investigate the platform for some time now. AMD does not offer a supported Ryzen server platform in this space to match the Intel Xeon E-2200 series, but the price/ performance of its chips makes the prospect of using Ryzen attractive to many.
This mATX motherboard is available on its own as well as integrated into a pair of 1U barebones systems offered by ASRock Rack. There are two motherboards in this immediate family; the X470D4U which we are reviewing today, and the X470D4U2-2T which we will review later.

- AMD Quad CrossFireX and CrossFireX
A well-executed flagship motherboard can be a joyous piece of enthusiast tech to behold, but by definition tends to be really expensive. Asrock’s new Z490 Phantom Gaming Velocita ($229.99) may not have all the latest high-end features (20Gbps USB ports! Onboard OLED display!) of a flagship model, but this board entices with its value proposition instead.
Packing a capable set of features at a reasonable price, the ATX-form-factor Velocita has what it takes to become one of the more widely used Z490 motherboards for the new generation of Intel “Comet Lake-S” CPUs.
Best 1151 Motherboards Under 100 – BUYER’S GUIDE
While your motherboard isn’t going to have any kind of direct impact on your in-game experience, it will play a large role in determining what components you can put into your build. The cheaper the motherboard you choose, the more limited you will be.
However, if you are working with a tight budget, you can definitely choose a less-expensive motherboard. And, if all you are planning on doing is building a single video card setup then you don’t necessarily have to spend hundreds of dollars on an extreme motherboard.
Ultimately, though, your motherboard is an important part of your computer and you should definitely take the time to choose one that will serve your needs and even will give you upgrade options in the future.
