1.ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z

Features

OUR TAKE

The ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z bares a resemblance to it’s earlier incarnation the Crosshair V Formula and many have taken that cosmetic similarity and ran with the assumption. The fact is that the ‘Z’ line is all new, from the PCB up, with very tangible changes. From the power delivery to the on-board audio, many features have been improved, revised, or just simply replaced with better.

The Formula Z presents itself in a very similar package to that of its predecessor the Formula IV. It’s a spare no expense, Velcro flapped, windowed showcase that matches the high end look and feel of the Formula V-Z. The Formula Z is part of the highly regarded and gamer smile evoking ROG or Republic of Gamers lineup.

A line designed for the demanding task of gaming, with all of the heightened power requirements and conveniences that a gamer looks for when putting together that multi GPU machine, designed to chew through those heavily shaded and tessellated titles sitting on store shelves.

2.ASUS AM4 TUF G

Features

OUR TAKE

Asus’ TUF lineup has changed from the ultra-robust, heavy shielding it was known for in years past and has evolved more toward gaming-centric boards with protection on individual parts such as the PCIe and DIMM slots.

ESD guards, additional surge protection measures and military-grade components are still a part of the TUF lineup, but the additional hardening went beyond what was necessary for most use cases.

These changes have made the Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus Wi-Fi the second-least-expensive board in the Asus X570 product stack just missing the mark to be  our best motherboards pick in the budget X570 category.

3.ASUS Sabertooth 990FX

Features

OUR TAKE

An increasing element of recent motherboard design is control. Enthusiasts want access to everything, and the ability to adjust and monitor it all becomes a high priority.

This means more temperature sensors, upgraded fan controls, the ability to see what’s in the system while in the case, and by extension the ability to run in lower power modes for long periods of time without worrying about the elements or at high power modes at long periods of time also.

ASUS first introduced the TUF line back with X58 to answer this question, and we’ve reviewed several models since. The newest iteration to the concept is the X99 Sabertooth.

4.Gigabyte AM3+ AMD DDR3

Features

OUR TAKE

We would not recommend building a brand new machine using this motherboard and the AM3+ socket simply because of the brand new Ryzen processors.

However, if you find a good cheap and used FX-8350 or 8320 chip and want to pair it with a decent motherboard, go with this one. It is currently the best rated AM3+ motherboard and has already proven its worth.

It offers 4 DIMM slots of DDR3 rated at 1.5V each and supported OC frequencies of 2000/1866 MHz though to achieve these speeds you need to use an AM3+ processor. As for audio, it offers Dolby Surround sound using Realtek ALC1150 codec.

6.GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3

Features

OUR TAKE

Probably the last 990FX chipset to get manufactured, the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 is a slight update on the previous generations of the GA-990FXA. This motherboard supports AM3/AM3+ series processors and provides high-TDP CPU support with 3 PCIe interfaces supporting dual way Crossfire and SLI.

It comes with 6 SATA3 ports and RAID 0/1/5/10 support. A total of two USB 3.0 slots to the back with Power Off fast-charging USB ports colored separately Blue. This motherboard can handle water Cooled AIOs and many fans though there are limited headers to connect external fans.

7.ASUS M5A97

Features

OUR TAKE

Prior to the launch of the new Sandy Bridge-E platform, we have to work our way through the AMD based boards we received. Today we’re looking at the ASUS M5A97 Evo and this is one of the more interesting boards we’ve looked at due to the fact it carries with it a price tag of only $119 US.

With support for the new FX series of AMD processors along with being part of the new 900 series chipsets, this could be a really great option for people who want to get in on the AMD FX fun without breaking the bank. This looks to be very much a board that represents what the AMD platform is all about with some strong features and a really aggressive price tag.

The first thing we need to do, though, is check out the package to see what’s going on in that department. Once we’ve done that we’ll start to move closer into the motherboard itself to see just what the ASUS M5A97 Evo offers.

8.MSI Gaming AMD Ryzen

Features

OUR TAKE

That’s a big change from AMD’s traditional role of having significantly less expensive motherboards than Intel. When asked about the source of the higher pricing, Chiang said, “Technology wise, PCIe Gen 4 will contribute a lot of cost on the motherboard, and AMD right now they intend to sell X570 chipset for higher pricing.”

AMD used an ASMedia chipset for its previous-gen motherboards, but the company now produces its own silicon for the task. Chiang told us that, while pricing isn’t final, it appears that AMD could increase the cost of the chipset itself significantly. “But you know, [it is] still in the discussion. It’s not finalized yet, but it appears that [we] will have a price gap between X570 and X470.

9.MSI MPG Z390

Features

OUR TAKE

They’re a necessary means to an end for most PC gamers, and that’s fine. So long as a new motherboard does its job, doesn’t get in the way, and allows you to get the most out of the rest of your expensive PC hardware, that’s all you can ask.

Unless you’re planning on strapping a bunch of graphics cards together, along with an unwieldy RAID array, then most of us PC gamers can get by with a relatively modest motherboard as the base of their PC.

And that’s what MSI’s MPG Z390 Gaming Edge AC is looking to offer. But, despite its relatively low price for a top-end chipset board, this MSI Z390 still has the sort of lengthy feature set you’d want for your gaming PC. What’s not to like?

10.MSI 970A-G43

Features

OUR TAKE

The MSI 970A-G43 is an ATX AM3+ motherboard for AMD FX processors. It uses the AMD 970 and SB950 chipsets designed to make the most of eight-core processors, so we dutifully kitted ours out with an octa-core, 4GHz AMD FX-8350 chip to see what the motherboard was capable of.

We first ran our 4K multimedia benchmarking tests with the processor clocked at stock speeds. In this test it managed an overall score of 99.

Navigate to the UEFI BIOS, click the OC Genie II button and the motherboard will automatically alter your processor and RAM clock speeds to what it thinks will be a stable but worthwhile overclock.

AMD Motherboards

Although there are a lot of technical aspects and numbers to consider when looking at different motherboards, they are ultimately pretty simple to understand. Your motherboard basically acts as a nervous system within your computer, connecting all the components and hardware together. If you already have components you want to use, such as a processor, memory, and hard drive, then make sure you pick out a motherboard which is compatible with all of them. On the other hand, if you’re building a new system from scratch, then your motherboard impacts all the other pieces of hardware you can choose. Either way, look at the different elements of a motherboard and consider all your components as part of a whole.

Socket Type

The socket type on a motherboard indicates what types of CPUs can be installed onto it. For AMD models, the major socket types are FM2, FM2+, and AM3+. Within those major types, however, there are a number of different CPU types and models that can be installed in each socket.

For example, an AM3+ socket can work with different AMD Phenom II and Athlon II CPUs. If you already have a processor you want to use, make sure you choose a motherboard with a socket type that it can fit into. For a new system, pick out a motherboard and processor that are compatible. For more information about different types of AMD CPUs, check out the
