A simple visual comparison put the MSI monitor extremely close to my typical everyday screen, which is a calibrated NEC display. I let both displays sit on for roughly 30 minutes and then compared them. The MSI showed impressive accuracy right out of the box.

The power delivery heatsinks have also been upgraded with the heatsink covering the MOSFETs and extending further over towards the rear IO. The newer heatsinks have a cleaner and futuristic look, but with a lighter grey finish. Other differences include the SATA port implementation.

When looking at the overall performance of the B450 Tomahawk, the most positive points to highlight come in the power consumption testing where the 2W idle power draw of the B450 chipset clearly plays a big part. Even at maximum load the B450 Tomahawk even manages to do well with one of the lowest maximum power draws seen from an AM4 board so far.

The general performance throughout the compute and rest of the system based tests is around average for an entry-level option, which is more than acceptable for most systems. Unfortunately the less that impressive audio is a mark against the board.

The Gigabyte B550M DS3H motherboard may look seemingly boring, but I can tell you that what it lack in looks, it certainly makes up for it in terms of features, compatibility and versatility.

The motherboard comes a decent amount of features including, PCIE 4.0 support, HD audio, Gigabyte 8118 gigabit LAN, USB 3.2 and Gen1 , 4 x SATA ports, 1 x PCIE 4.0 x16 steel slot, 1 x PCIE 3.0 slot, 1 x PCIE 4.0 M.2 slot, 1 x PCIE 3.0 M.2 slots for SSDs, and 4 x DIMM slots supporting memory speeds of up to DDR4 4733 (O.C.).

5.ASROCK H470 Phantom

ASRock’s H470 Steel Legend comes in a fair bit slower than the Z490 powered options with a time of 2 minutes and 17 seconds.

The ASRock H470 Phantom Gaming 4 motherboard in micro-ATX form factor offers two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots for plug-in and expansion cards. The first x16 slot is connected with a full 16 lanes, the second with four lanes. There are three x1 slots available for additional PCIe cards.

Up to 128 GB DDR4 RAM in dual-channel mode can be used in the four DIMM slots. The H470 chipset supports clock rates up to 2933 MHz, depending on the Comet Lake CPU installed. Two M.2 slots for PCIe / SATA M.2 SSDs and six SATA 6G connectors enable storage drives to be connected.

A look over the specs indicate that your is well spent on some important areas. You get a pair of heatsink covered M.2 slots, an e-key M.2 slot for an optional Wi-Fi card, a front USB Type-C header and a good helping of RGB onboard, plus an additional two RGB headers and two ARGB headers.

We count a total of six fan headers spread around the board. The PCB’s urban camo silk screening is a bit tacky perhaps, but the heatsinks have a nice matt finish. Very solid. Metal! And, as you can see at a glance, it’s one of very few motherboards that isn’t just a plain rectangle.

7.ASRock X570 Taichi

The X570 PCH’s expanded I/O means that slot layout is one of very few things that the new X570 Taichi has in common with its X470 predecessor’s design. Most of the previous board’s added features have been upgraded on the new model, such as Intel’s 2.4Gb/s AX200 module, bringing the new board up to 802.11ax / Wi-Fi 6 speed. The I/O panel adds firmware update and CLR_CMOS buttons, the third PCIe slot gets added metal reinforcement, and all slots support PCIe 4.0 mode.

ASRock dresses for success with a loaded and shrouded X570 Taichi motherboard, enabling most of AMD’s latest platform feature set when paired with a Ryzen 3000-series processor.

And while still a niche, dual-M.2 PCIe x8 add-in cards for ultra-fast, RAIDed NVMe storage are becoming increasingly common as drive prices plunge and enthusiasts try and get around the current limits of M.2’s four-lane PCe bottleneck, as well as the PCH limitations of Intel’s mainstream chipsets.

These developments have, in part, contributed to the continued interest in cube-shaped gaming builds using Micro ATX motherboards. Pros & Cons

The most obvious changes to the board are the larger heatsinks and what’s hiding underneath. The Pro Gaming uses a much beefier 10-phase VRM design compared to the 6-phases on the Plus Gaming. Since the VRM changed and more was extended on top, there’s a second heatsink to keep them under control.

Another difference comes on the storage side with the addition of another M.2 slot. Some PCIe ports had to be moved around, but now the top slot will support both SATA and PCIe 3.0 x4, with the bottom slot wired PCIe 2.0 x2 and SATA.
