Today’s sample uses the very robust H97 chipset, and was $75 on Newegg when this review was prepared, but is now at $70. The ASRock H97M Pro4 is a micro-ATX board with 4+1 power phases and the ability to overclock the unlocked Pentium G3258. Let’s take a look at it — but first, a little vindication: I achieved very poor overclocking results in prior testing, so I bought another G3258 to see if the budget boards I’m testing are the issue, or if I had simply lost the silicon lottery, which was my suspicion.
The board about to be exposed could not overclock the original chip over 4.0GHz stable either, but the new chip was fairly happy at 4.2GHz on the board-selected 1.28V, just getting a little warm in some tests. That warmth discouraged me from going for an even higher overclock, but a tweaker, using a better cooler, may zoom right on past my efforts. Worth noting is that I couldn’t find a spot on or near the VRMs registering as high as 37C on my IR thermometer during my tests.back to menu ↑

In my case, I’m tossing my recently acquired AMD FX-8350 into the ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0. That mouthful of letters and numbers represents the newest offering from ASUS sporting the 990FX chipset, AM3+ socket, and enough features to satisfy most without flattening your wallet more than needed.
The ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0 offers up similar features to those found in mainstream AMD 990FX chipset boards: SATA 6G ports, 8-channel audio, and enough PCI Express ports to shake a stick at. Additionally, there are an extra two SATA 6G ports thanks to the inclusion of an ASMedia SATA controller.
Another ASMedia controller bumps up the complement of eight internal USB 2.0 ports with an additional two internal USB 3.0 ports for ultra-fast connectivity to external devices. The top-of-the-range AMD 990FX chipset in the Asus Sabertooth 990FX motherboard is all about adding support for AMD’s formidably titled and mysterious Bulldozer CPUs.

At the time of publishing, the matured Asus X570 lineup includes options from the TUF, Prime, Strix, WS (Workstation), and ROG lines, a total of 14 boards. Since we last checked, Asus added a Mini-ITX option, which was the only form-factor missing.

We would not recommend building a brand new machine using this motherboard and the AM3+ socket simply because of the brand new Ryzen processors. However, if you find a good cheap and used FX-8350 or 8320 chip and want to pair it with a decent motherboard, go with this one. It is currently the best rated AM3+ motherboard and has already proven its worth.
Using an AMD FX CPU today is like opting to start last at a marathon and intentionally coming last. FX CPUs are now a decade old, and they cannot match the performance of current generation Core i3 processors let alone the latest Ryzen 5 processors.

The ASRock 970 Extreme4 is an ATX (305 x 244mm) motherboard with support for the latest AM3+, Phenom II X6, X4 and X3 processors, and so on right down to the Sempron. There are four DIMM slots for dual-channel DDR3 2100(overclocked)memory, five SATA 6Gbps, 7.1 HD audio, four USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports and, of course, three PCle 2.0 16x slots, two PCIe 2.0 lx slots and a pair of standard PCI slots for legacy hardware.
Although reasonably spaced apart, it is a bit of a tight fit between PCIe slots two and three, when compared to the gap between PCIe slots one and two. This means that, in our tests at least, a pair of Radeon R9 280s fitted comfortably in slots one and two, but when we added another in slot three, things started to get a little too tight for our liking.

The FX-6300 mother board is a workhorse and that is evident by its wide range of overclocking abilities. Completely unlocked, you can use as many multipliers as you wish. That is the true beauty of this processor and best of all, it comes with a very affordable price tag. But, does all this customization offer the requisite results to justify a purchase today when there are slightly more expensive alternatives from Intel? Take for instance the i3-6100 processor. With higher base clock speeds and significantly better single core performance across all emulators, should you not invest into an FX-6300 mother board at all?
The answer is a mixed bag. Back when the FX-6300 mother board released, the choice was simple. If multi-thread performance was what you were after, then the FX-6300 was a perfect choice as it reached the abilities of 3rd generation core i5 processors. However, as Intel made significant leaps the FX-6300 has been relegated to fight with core i3 processors. The good news though is that the FX-6300 is still perfect for a budget build. The big bucks you save on this processor can be better spent on other peripherals and hardware.
Let’s get straight into the benchmarks and scores. With PassMark, it is immediately evident that single core performance of the FX 6300 is poor. With just 1,446 it falls well short of the 2,105 posted by Core i3 6100. However, if you look at Multi-Core performance on PassMark, the FX 6300 beats the Core i3 6100 by a good 1000 points. The question therefore is, what kind of application you plan on using your CPU for. It also points to the fact that the i3 6100 isn’t exactly a great choice though its multi-core performance is still acceptable at 5,464.
Even the clock speeds are a tad slower than the 6100 core i3 but the difference in Cinebench isn’t enough to pick a winner. What does work in favor of the FX-6300 though is its ability to drastically overclock.back to menu ↑
