Today we’re taking a look at MSI’s new X570 Tomahawk motherboard. We’ve been keen to test this thing out for months now as this is a very important board for MSI. Not only does it mark the next stop in their X570 “redemption” tour, but at , it’s a mainstream board many of you will be interested in.
Up until now, MSI’s offering at has been the X570 Gaming Edge WiFi, a board that failed our Ryzen 9 3900X VRM stress test. Making matters worse, no other brand failed that test at any price point.
Those of you who have been following our X570 VRM thermal testing will know what we think of MSI’s A Pro, Gaming Edge, Gaming Plus and Gaming Pro Carbon… in terms of VRM performance they’re all pretty lackluster.

Motherboard makers love to load up tiny boards with big-model-number chipsets, but those boards often lack the bonus features that would have made the big chipset worthwhile. The Fatal1ty B450 Gaming-ITX/ac takes the opposite approach, offering most of the features of AMD’s low-cost chipset while retaining the overclockability associated with high-end motherboard models.
AMD’s B450 chipset appears to be an almost-perfect fit for compact gaming motherboards, since its reduced PCIe pathway count doesn’t impact the PCIe 3.0 lanes fed directly from the CPU to the single x16 slot and four-lane NVME interface.
So much of the AM4 platform is fed directly by the CPU that we could almost say “Why even bother adding the B450?” if not for the SATA ports and network controllers connected there.

It has been long overdue for us to review but we wanted to wait on AGESA 1.0.0.3 ABBA firmware before we’d continue, we finally had some time to peek at the PRIME X570 Pro series of motherboards for Ryzen 3000. AMD prepped the X570 chipset offering a more refined experience for your Ryzen Generation 3 processor. The board offers PCIe Gen 4.0 and has distinctive looks in its white design.
This X570 motherboard is residing in the mainstream to high-end motherboard spectrum for the 3rd generation AMD Ryzen processors. With this release, you will spot a breathtaking motherboard loaded with features, DDR4 A-XMP functions, and PCIe 4.0 PCI slots and multiple PCIe 4.0 connected M.2. slots, with a massive heatsink as well. Other then that, the features are all very basic as there is no AX WIFI or Multi-GigE to be found on this board.
AMD has been going strong over the past year, rattling all the cages with an Intel logo on them. From top to bottom they have been able to compete with Intel. With Zen2 (codename ‘Matisse’) AMD is introducing a new line of processors starting at hexacore processors in the entry-level to mainstream segment (yeah, you read that right), eight and twelve cores for the mainstream to high-end, and up to 16-core Ryzen processors for the enthusiast level.
