Within Gigabyte’s Z490 product stack, the Master sits below the Aorus Xtreme , the flagship Aorus Xtreme Waterforce  and above the Aorus Ultra . Pricing has increased significantly from Z390 to Z490 (across all partners) and the Ultra doesn’t escape that fate, at $100 more than its Z390 predecessor.

The Master performed as expected, hanging with the other boards we have benchmarked to this point. Like most other boards, the Master took a few liberties with Intel’s specification for our Core i9-10900K processor, running boost frequencies with higher limits.

The CPU ran at 4.9 GHz in most of the tests, hitting the 5.3 GHz Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) for a single thread when it fits within the parameters. Manual overclocking went on without a hitch, reaching a thermally limited 5.2 GHz with the VRM handling our stress test without issue (and without fans).

2.Gigabyte AORUS MASTER

Gigabyte’s X570S Aorus Master marks the second chipset fan-omitting X570S board to make it to our test bench (the first was ASRock’s X570S Riptide).

While X570S doesn’t bring with it substantive new features (outside of the absence of a fan), it does give companies the opportunity to refresh their AMD-based board lineups, add more features of their own, and make another run at our best motherboards list.

Outside of the now-fanless chipset, the X570S Aorus Master comes with improved power delivery, four M.2 sockets, an updated appearance, integrated Wi-Fi 6E, and more.

Up for analysis today is GIGABYTE’s Z590 Aorus Master, which is one of its premium models and has plenty of high-quality features and controllers onboard. Based on the Aorus gaming series, the Z590 Aorus Master includes 10 gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E, three M.2 slots, and large power delivery.

From the specifications, it’s a behemoth but with an attractive price tag when compared to the flagship Z590 offerings.

From our experience with previous generations of Intel’s premium desktop chipsets, including Z490, Z390, Z370, etc., we’ve seen numerous trends of motherboard vendors stacking features onto its PCBs. Users looking to use legacy peripherals will find a single PS/2 combo keyboard and mouse port, while Ryzen APU’s are supported and a pair of video outputs are present including an HDMI and DisplayPort 1.4. Finishing off the rear panel is a small BIOS Flashback button.

The MSI MPG B550 Gaming Edge Wifi has an MSRP of  and represents its mid-range AM4 series aimed at gamers. MSI has included some premium components including a Realtek RTL8125B 2.5 GbE Ethernet controller, with an assisting Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 interface and offers users with support for BT 5.0 devices.

From the storage, only the top PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot includes a heatsink, and looking at the who B550 product stack across multiple vendors, it seems to lose out a little in terms of overall features compared to some. The PRIME X570-PRO comes in ASUS’s typical packaging for their PRIME series. There is a picture of the drive on the front of the box and it lets us know that the board is of course ASUS Aura Sync compatible. 6.ASUS TUF X570-PRO

At the time of publishing, the matured Asus X570 lineup includes options from the TUF, Prime, Strix, WS (Workstation), and ROG lines, a total of 14 boards. Since we last checked, Asus added a Mini-ITX option, which was the only form-factor missing.

Today, the product stack consists of a wide variety of motherboards in varying sizes, feature sets, and price points. There is likely something for everyone in the company’s X570 lineup.

Digging down into the performance results, we saw slightly below average scores/times in long-running CPU heavy multi-threaded tests such as Cinebench, Handbrake, POV-Ray and Corona. The PCMark 10 suite was on the opposite side of things, generally running as fast or faster than most other boards we’ve tested.

7.ASUS AMD AM4

Offering support for both the Ryzen 5000 and 3000 series processors, X570 is still AMD’s flagship consumer chipset with plenty of PCIe 4.0 support through its full-length PCIe slots and M.2 slots. For users considering B550, chipset-based PCIe 4.0 is the major benefit here.

One of the models launched back when X570 was announced is the ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming, so even though it has been out a while, it has been a popular option and we wanted to test it. Representing the ROG Strix series that caters to the mid-range, it focuses on blending modern aesthetics with RGB, premium controller sets and features.

The X570-E follows a similar design to the vast majority of its Strix branded models, with futuristic graffiti across the heatsinks, with RGB LEDs integrated into the rear panel cover and chipset heatsinks.

8.ASRock X399 TAICHI

While the CPU SoC offers 60 lanes of PCI-E 3.0 (four other lanes connect to the X399 chipset) for up to seven devices, it also provides HD audio, eight USB 3.0 ports, and the SPI bus (BIOS communication).

The X399 chipset offers eight SATA 6Gb/s ports, eight PCI-E 2.0 ports, two USB 3.1 ports, five USB 3.0 ports, and six USB 2.0 ports. There are also two PCI-E 3.0 ports in the X399 chipset that can be used for an extra four SATA ports or two SATA Express ports.

ASRock’s X399 Taichi takes full advantage of the new X399 chipset and includes many of ASRock’s unique features. There’s also no Wi-Fi, but there’s an e-key slot for an optional card, and those aren’t super expensive if you want to add some wireless networking to your machine. We spot seven fan headers around the board, and two headers for USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports. There’s a single USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C header too.

RGB is minimal, with just a small PG logo atop the chipset heatsink, though there are ARGB headers if bling is your thing.

The new ASRock  that we’re reviewing here doesn’t include things like this, but it is a $185 board, so you shouldn’t really expect it to. It does face stiff competition from a plethora of quality B550 boards in its price range, however, but all of those boards are missing a key characteristic that’s inherent to X570 boards.

One of the ways that makes the X399 Phantom Gaming 6 one of the cheapest boards is the processor support: ASRock has built this motherboard to support AMD Threadripper with a thermal design point of up to 180 W, which means it can only support up to 16 core processors such as the AMD Threadripper 2950X. Because ASRock’s focus for this model is to offer users an entry-level pathway to the high-end desktop, this is a fair compromise.

Moving away from the old Fatal1ty gaming branding has been a smart move for ASRock. ASRock’s new Phantom Gaming series has adopted a subtler color theme with black metallic heatsinks.

A. You need to know which processor you want to be building your new rig around. Are you resolutely tying yourself to the mast of the good ship Intel as it ploughs on through the roughest waters it’s known? Or are you going to fly the flag of AMD proudly? Given the AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs’ performance, I know where I’d be putting my money…

Can I overclock on any motherboard?

A. No. There are absolutely restrictions in place to stop that, especially on the Intel side. It has opened up memory overclocking across its 500-series chipsets, but still the Z590 is your only chance of overclocking the latest Rocket Lake K-series CPUs. But don’t worry, they don’t overclock very well.

AMD is more generous allowing all its CPUs and most of its motherboard chipsets. Basically, if you make sure not to go for the cheapest Ryzen board, one with an ‘A’ at the front of its nomenclature, then you’re good to tweak. Though again, there really are limited returns.
