To match Ryzen’s exciting capabilities, motherboard vendors from across the globe have prepared and launched their first generation of high-end motherboards. One of ASRock’s offerings is the X370 Taichi.
ASRock’s X370 Taichi is their third Taichi branded motherboard to hit the market. The Taichi is one of ASRock’s top-end motherboards, so it’s loaded with the latest features. The ying-yang symbol provides a pleasant aesthetic to match your (Ry)zen processor. Excuse the wordplay, but the coincidence is a neat thing, and could provide for a great build theme.

2.ASRock X570 Pro

ASRock have been quick off the mark with the Ryzen 3000-series launch, throwing out several different models across a variety of form factors. Within todays review we’ll look at the Micro ATX X570M Pro4.
Engineered around the AMD X570 chipset, the Pro4 is ready to accept any of the Ryzen 2nd or 3rd Gen. CPUs, up-to and including the upcoming Ryzen 3950X. With the X570 chipset comes a plethora of next-gen features, one of which is the PCI-E 4.0 standard, offering double the bandwidth of the outgoing specification, but with full backwards compatibility.
Making use of the new PCI-E 4.0 specification are a pair of x16 full-length ports as well as a pair of NVMe M.2 slots for rapid storage solutions.
Other features employed on the Pro4 include an XXL Aluminium alloy heatsink to improve stability by removing heat from the MOSFETs around the CPU, premium 50A power chokes for enhanced voltage delivery to the processor, a 2oz copper PCB for effective temperature reduction with a high-density fibre glass PCB for improved strength and reduced susceptibility to humidity.back to menu ↑
3.ASRock Socket AM4

The Asrock Socket AM4 comes in at just $70 and while it might only pack a 3+3 phase VRM, both the Vcore and SoC portions of the VRM feature passive cooling, something no other MicroATX B450 board offers. Cooling on the SoC VRM is important, particularly if you plan on using a Raven Ridge APU, and crucially if you plan to overclock the integrated Vega GPU.
Not that the Socket AM4 is a bum chipset. In fact, it isn’t miles away from its bigger Socket AM4 X570 brother by most metrics. The key differentiator between the two involves the link between the CPU and PCH chip, the latter essentially being the motherboard chipset thanks to much of what used to be chipset functionality now residing on the CPU package. The X370 platform shouldn’t be a surprise anymore, and it’s showing its growing maturity with various assortments of shapes, sizes, and bundles on the shelves. Among the boxes of red and black, RGB, and preposterous bold text, the ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac is a nice change of pace.
The “K” on the front of the packaging slices through the black void with clean lines, sharp edges, and red accents gleaming along the blade’s edges. Flipping to the back, the black and white scheme is clean, and the extra colors do not overpower the simple elegance.

The ASRock X470 Taichi is an unusual, eye-catching motherboard. It’s unusual because it costs £210 – so it’s a little more expensive than its main competition, but it isn’t pricey enough to really hit the high-end area of the market.

Before we dig into the ROG Crosshair VI Hero, we should point out that it isn’t the only X370 motherboard in Asus’ lineup. The Asus Prime X370-Pro is lighter on features (particularly those aimed at overclockers), but it might hit a sweeter spot for mainstream gamers who are happy with what the Ryzen 5 and 7 processors provide at stock speeds, or builders facing budget constraints.
Of course, if you go with the Prime X370-Pro, you won’t be able to 3D print ROG motherboard accessories…

Who needs eight 10Gbps USB ports on the I/O panel? With all of the X570 platform’s USB 3.x ports offering that bandwidth, a better question might be why Asus’s competitors (specifically the MSI MEG X570 Ace, Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master and ASRock X570 Taichi) are substituting some of those with 5Gbps ports.
But who would be willing to give up one of the competitor’s three M.2 slots for four SATA ports? If that sounds like you, the ROG Strix X570-E Gaming beckons. With these features nailed down, the only remaining question is why Asus labels this board “gaming” rather than “pro.”

We haven’t seen many B450 motherboards in for review since they launched, so today is a good day. I have in my hands, the B450M Mortar from MSI. We loved their B350 version which joined us with the previous Ryzen launches, and they should be a nice upgrade for it.
It’s still pretty much the same design, but a few nips and tweaks are included. Of course, it comes with the right BIOS out of the box too, making it compatible with Ryzen 2000 series CPUs and more. Like most motherboard manufactures MSI has quite the Intel Z270 motherboard lineup, separated into a few different categories. Starting off you have the Gaming Series, which of course is targeted at gamers as well as enthusiasts.

The last gaming series from MSI is the Arsenal Gaming Series, which has the Tomahawk, Mortar and Bazooka board. The crux of any motherboard review boils down to performance and the X470 Gaming Plus is a good performer for the price point it currently sits at. The overall performance was competitive within our benchmarking suite with the biggest positives coming in power consumption with this board showing some of the lowest and most efficient results from an AM4 motherboard so far.
This is no doubt down to the reduction in power from the first generation of AM4 chipsets (B350/X370) with the newer B450 and X470 chipsets having an idle wattage of around 2 W. Compute and gaming performance triggered no concerns with the poorest result coming when booting into Windows.
like we experienced on our test bench with the MSI MEG X399 Creation TR4 motherboard, the non-UEFI POST time was absurdly higher than the other boards on test. Audio performance was as expected as can be when equipped with a Realtek ALC892 HD audio codec and the overclocking experience was painless as our Ryzen 7 1700 managed to hit its apex of 4.0 GHz very easily indeed.back to menu ↑
