2.AMD Ryzen 5 1600

In short, video editors or digital media creators on a tight budget who want to cut rendering times should put this chip on their short list for their next build. That’s especially true if you’re not the type who wants to fuss with overclocking and aftermarket coolers.

Running at stock clock speeds of 3.2GHz (base) and 3.6GHz (boost), the Ryzen 5 1600 is no slouch at less core-intensive tasks, as well. And like all Ryzen CPUs, it’s unlocked for overclocking. So the skilled and the patient will likely be able to push it closer to the 4GHz or 4.1GHz that seems to be the general limit (without exotic cooling methods like liquid nitrogen) that we’ve seen when testing other Ryzen CPUs.

3.AMD Ryzen 3 3200G

The latest pair of AMD CPUs with built-in graphics processing—two chips ending in “G”—offers solid budget-level computing performance, excellent-for-the-money graphics pep, and no-brainer value. The entry-level model is the  Ryzen 3 3200G.

For its wallet-friendly price, you get not only a CPU with a version of AMD’s robust built-in Vega graphics processing, but also a very serviceable stock cooling fan. You could build a surprisingly powerful budget PC around it, but we think it’s better to spend just more on the other of the pair, the Editors’ Choice-winning Ryzen 5 3400G, which offers all of the Ryzen 3 3200G’s benefits with significantly better graphics and computing performance.

4.Intel Core i5-10500

The Core i5-10500 reviewed today is a 6-core/12-thread processor that strikes the psychologically pleasing 3 GHz barrier, and it is clocked at 3.10 GHz (the i5-10400 ticks at 2.90 GHz). At 4.50 GHz, its maximum Turbo Boost frequency is 200 MHz higher than the Core i5-10400.

Intel’s Core i5-10500 is based on the 10th generation “Comet Lake” microarchitecture, which enables HyperThreading and increases L3 cache sizes across the board to make the absolute most of the “Skylake” core design that’s been in use for the past four generations.

Compared to the previous generation Core i5 processors, which were 6-core/6-thread chips with 9 MB cache, the 10th generation Core i5 desktop processor family maxes out the 6-core “Comet Lake” silicon that resembles the “Coffee Lake” die, and features 12 MB of L3 cache.

For the longest time, having an affordable Intel mainstream processor with Hyper-Threading enabled seemed like a pipe dream. But, with AMD giving it a good run for its money, Team Blue has decided to spread the joy of Hyper-Threading around to the entire Comet Lake-S lineup – even the Pentiums – instead of reserving it for the top of its product stack.

So, what you’ve got in the Intel Core i5-10600K is a 6-core, 12-thread processor that delivers impressive performance while keeping the price tag affordable. And, for the first time in a while, two competing chips in the same price window – the i5-10600K and the AMD Ryzen 5 3600X – have the same amount of cores and threads, which benefits consumers immensely.

6.AMD Ryzen 5 2600

The second-gen AMD Ryzen 2 processor range launched with a pair of new X-series CPUs, offering the highest clock speeds and best performance. But wherever the 2700X and 2600X go so will follow the non-X variants… and so we have the impressive Ryzen 5 2600, the perfect gaming CPU for anyone happy to indulge in a little OC play.

But what’s in an X? These X-series chips come with the highest clockspeeds and supposedly have the highest level of automatic overclocking, powered by the Precision Boost and XFR features of Ryzen’s latest silicon. How much does that really matter in the final reckoning? Not as much as you might think if you’re willing to get your hands dirty.

7.AMD Ryzen 5 1600

The issue with overclocking is, if that’s your aim, you’ll probably want to pay extra for an aftermarket cooler, rather than the Wraith Spire cooler that AMD ships in the box with this chip. You may have an existing cooler you’d like to use.

But unless you bought it very recently, you’ll need to check with the manufacturer about getting adapter brackets to work with AMD’s new AM4 platform. Older coolers won’t work out of the box, even if you’ve been extra-scrupulous about keeping all those metal bits that came in the box.

8.Intel Core i5-9600K

But now, fast Ryzen 5 CPUs often prove superior. Intel did increase the core count of its Coffee Lake-based Core i5s by 50 percent to grapple with AMD’s first-gen Ryzen 5 chips. However, the latest round of Ryzen 5 models is even faster, particularly in threaded workloads, as you can see in our CPU Benchmark Hierarchy.

Intel’s ninth-gen Core i7 and Core i9 processors come with more cores, too. Unfortunately, the Core i5-9600K we’re reviewing today does not. It includes the same six cores as its predecessor, along with a price tag that lands between Ryzen 5 2600X and Ryzen 7 2700. Worse, both competing CPUs are bundled with coolers, while Intel makes you buy your own.

9.Intel Core i3-10100

The Core i3-10100 is sometimes slower than its predecessor, the Core i3-9100, and the 3300X has proven itself to be a four-core CPU that punches above its weight in popular games, making it a hot pick for cost-conscious PC builders and buyers.

Unless you need onboard graphics or must be on Intel’s LGA 1200 socket, the Ryzen 3 3300X is categorically a better choice (and if you do need onboard graphics, the  AMD Ryzen 3 3200G might finish the fight). Otherwise, in those limited scenarios, the Core i3-10100 fulfills its role within Intel’s stack dutifully enough. The Ryzen 3 3300X and 3200G just do it better, for the money, in AMD’s.
